EUROPEAN TOUR: Estoril Open de Portugal
Spain's 20 year old Pablo Martin-Benavides made European Tour history as he became the first amateur to ever win a European
Tour event. Half way through the third round Benavides was well down the field, but a back nine of 29 strokes saw him move
into contention. The young amateur played flawless golf in the final round and with birdies on 4, 7 and 10 had taken the lead.
Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin put some pressure on Benavides with birdies on 2 of his last three holes, but that was not enough
as Martin-Benavides showed no signs of any nerves and closed out with 8 straight pars to finish on 7 under-par 277 to win by
one from Jacquelin and create his bit of history.
PGA TOUR: Shell Houston Open
In the final event before the first Major of the year we saw one of the most amazing finishes in tour history. Defending
Champion Stuart Appleby had just birdied the 17th hole to get within a shot of leader Adam Scott as they played the last.
Appleby found the fairway before Scott lost his drive to the right and it went into the water. After taking his drop, Scott
hit his third shot to some 50 feet from the hole. Appleby now in with a chance to retain his title then amazingly hit his
approach into the water. That resulted in a double bogey 6 for Appleby, but the fun had not finished. Scott stood over his 50
foot putt and rolled it in for par to finish on 17 under-par 271. That was good enough for a 3 shot victory over Appleby and
Bubba Watson who birdied the final hole to tie Appleby for second spot.
LPGA TOUR: Kraft Nabisco Championship
The first Major of the year had one of those days when the lead changed on numerous occasions and it looked like no on
wanted to win it. Sweden's Suzann Pettersen had moved into a 2 shot lead as she played the 15th hole, but she then dropped 4
shots in the next 3 holes to drop back. Morgan Pressel was the only player not dropping any shots and when she made a superb
birdie at the 18th, she had not dropped a shot in her final 24 holes and set the target at 3 under-par 285. With Pettersen
finishing 1 back of Pressel Scotland's Catriona Matthew had a chance to win with a birdie at the last, but she made a bogey
6 at the par 5 to tie Pettersen. Brittany Lincicome could also not manage to make birdie at the last and finished tied second
with Matthew and Pettersen. That meant that Morgan Pressel had won her first event on the LPGA Tour and become the youngest
ever winner of a Major on the LPGA Tour at 18 years of age.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Ginn Championship Hammock Beach Resort
In a final round where a number of players had a chance for victory, it was one of the lesser known names on the Champions
Tour that came away with his maiden victory. Mark O'Meara birdied 2 of his last 5 holes to tie Hale Irwin, who bogeyed the
18th on 11 under-par, but playing behind them was Keith Fergus. Fergus had led from the first round and was still 2 clear
playing the 17th. With the big names now very close, Fergus was able to hold his nerve and roll in an 11 foot par putt to
stay 2 clear. That turned out to be very important as Fergus was then able to take bogey at the last to finish on 12 under-par
204 and claim a 1 shot victory and in doing so become only the second player ever to win on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and
now the Champions Tour.
NATIONWIDE TOUR: Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship
On one of the toughest courses on tour and with the wind blowing the winning score of even-par 288 was only the second time
in tour history that a score of even-par or higher had ever won a tour event. With players dropping shots all over the course
in the tough conditions it looked like third round leader Omar Uresti was going to be hard to catch. Uresti started 4 clear,
but gave the rest hope though as he bogeyed three of his first 7 holes. Ten straight pars later though he was back to a 4 shot
lead playing the last. A double bogey 6 did not matter as Uresti finished on the even-par score and a 2 shot victory over Skip
Kendall and Aron Price.
